Workshop Description
Focus groups are an excellent way to gather non-scripted information from community memebers and to engage young people in a meningful way. They can be a particularly useful strategy for understanding the “why” behind common norms, attitudes, and perceptions. This workshop is appropriate for youth who will be engaging in focus group efforts and their adult allies. Participants learn how to develop focus group questions, to use interviewing and facilitation techniques, and to summarize and utilize the date collected. Conducting focus groups is a workshop overview of how you can deepen your understanding of your CHKS data in order to improve school climate, student engagement and parent engagement. The workshop will also help you devise action plans from the information you receive in focus groups.
Participants can expect to:
- Learn strategies for forming focus groups of students and focus groups of parents;
- Learn how to develop questions for focus groups, interviewing and facilitation techniques;
- Learn how to structure and conduct an interactive focus group session;
- Improve skills in explaining, evaluating and utilizing the information that comes from focus groups.
Target Audience
LCAP Coordinators, CHKS Coordinators, Principals and Administrators who want to increase student engagement.
