CLAS Webinar Series Description
The 2017 CPI Regional Trainings theme is “Cultural Competence,” a concept that must be considered at every step of the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF). The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) defines cultural competence as the ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures. The National Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) Standards are a set of fifteen action steps that aim to institutionalize principles of cultural competence in order to improve care quality, advance health equity, and reduce health disparities.
To prepare for the Regional Trainings, CPI developed four prerequisite webinars that provide details on the CLAS Standards. Your participation in the CLAS Webinar Series will ensure that you get the most value out of the Regional Trainings.
The first webinar will provide an overview of CLAS and cultural competence and demonstrate the relevance of CLAS to the SPF. The remaining webinars will introduce specific CLAS standards, explain how CLAS standards align with the SPF and substance use disorder prevention, and describe strategies for implementing the CLAS standards. Each webinar will include substantial time for questions and a facilitated discussion.
